Registration and Fees

Each course offered through the ISI program is sponsored by one of four Cooperating Idaho Institutions. Admission to these institutions is not required or granted when registering for an ISI course. Idaho residents and out-of-state students pay the same per-credit fee. Fees do not include textbooks, software or lab fees. Please review the Refund Schedule before registering for a course.

  • ISI courses parallel their on-campus counterparts in content and completion standards. The per-credit workload for ISI courses is equivalent to that of on-campus courses, so plan on a minimum of three months to complete most ISI courses.
  • The initial course completion date is one calendar year from the date of registration (see Exchanging a Course and Course Extensions for additional information).
  • Students can work at their own pace subject to the maximum number of assignments that can be submitted each week listed in the Course Rules on Canvas. Students receive grades for assignments within two weeks after the submission date, but instructors are not required to grade faster than the number of assignment submissions allowed per week. Additional grading time may be needed during holidays, vacations, or instructor illness.
  • If you have a personal or professional deadline (e.g., graduation certification, program admission, etc.), discuss it with your instructor using the contact information provided in the Course Rules and copy the ISI office at indepst@hatchingit.com. Set a schedule that allows you to complete assignments and exams at least one month before your deadline. Use, as a guide, the maximum number of assignments accepted each week for your course.
  • Students are required to submit assignments and exams consecutively, in the order outlined in the course. All assignments and exams must be submitted to complete a course. Course completion does not guarantee a passing course grade.
  • Upon finishing a course, please submit our online Course Evaluation form.

Some ISI courses require a proctor, including accounting, math and statistic courses. If you have a question about whether a course requires a proctor, please email the ISI office. For courses requiring a proctor, review the Proctor/Exam Request Form for proctor selection information and the responsibilities for students and proctors.

  • Each course requires a separate Proctor/Exam Request Form
  • All proctored exams must be administered in an educational setting
  • Submit the completed Proctor/Exam Request Form to the ISI office at least TWO weeks before scheduling the first exam
  • Exams are paper-based
  • Graded exams are not returned to the student

Students responsibilities

  • Payment of proctoring fees
  • Showing government-issued picture identification to the proctor before taking an exam (student ID cards are not acceptable)
  • Finding a qualified person to supervise the exam process, proctor exams, and return completed exams to ISI

Resources

  • The instructor submits a final course grade after all assignments and exams have been graded.
  • Next, an ISI office staff member will process the grade card, and the student will receive a Course Completion Letter in their Vandal email account. This letter contains information on how to request a transcript through the course sponsoring institution (all completed courses are recorded on a transcript at the institution that sponsors the course).
  • Wait at least one business day after receiving the Course Completion Letter before contacting the transcript office; the Office of the Registrar must record the grade before the course will appear on a transcript.
  • Official transcripts may be purchased from the credit-granting institution. ISI does not send out transcripts.
  • For contact information and information on which semester a final grade is recorded on the transcript, see hatchingit.com/isi/cooperating-institutions and locate the Transcripts section.

  1. You may register for ISI courses anytime. Select a course from Courses.
  2. University of Idaho students working toward a degree are required to obtain written approval from their academic adviser to register for an ISI course to ensure that ISI course credits are applicable toward their degree. Students can provide this verification by submitting a Course Approval Form. It is recommended that students at other institutions check with their Registrar, and academic department and adviser, to obtain signature confirmation that ISI credits will be accepted.
  3. See Course Fees for registration fees.
  4. Review the Refund Schedule.
  5. Select a registration and payment option.  It can take up to three business days to complete your registration and receive a registration confirmation email.
  6. Order textbooks and other course materials from an online bookseller or from the VandalStore.

  1. Online: Access the secure Registration Form and pay by credit card.
  2. Phone: Students registering by telephone must have their credit card information available at the time of registration.
  3. Mail: Print the Registration Form and mail the completed form with payment.
  4. Walk-in: Walk-in students may pay by cash. For your security, do not send cash by mail.

Payment in full is required at the time of registration and is accepted by check, money order, VISA, MasterCard or debit card. Most tuition vouchers from corporate institutions  and U.S. military students-Veterans Education Benefits are accepted. Make checks payable to U of I Bursar. Funding through Advanced Opportunities is available for students in grades 7-12 attending public school in Idaho. Visit the Advanced Opportunities website for more information: http://www.sde.idaho.gov/student-engagement/advanced-ops/index.html.

All ISI students are assigned a Vandal (V) number, which is used for identification purposes by the University of Idaho. The number begins with a capital V and is followed by eight digits. Your V number will be included in the receipt attached to your Registration Confirmation Email. Please include this number in all correspondence with the ISI office, including assignments and exams.

Upon registration, you will receive a Registration Confirmation Email with directions for getting started in your course. Your V number is included in this email, which is essential for setting up your accounts. You may begin your course immediately after the registration form has been processed and you have been added to the course in Canvas. You can take up to one year to complete a course, with the exception of FCS 435.

  • Course assignments and other course material are delivered online in Canvas. Although all assignments are available, you are required to complete assignments and exams consecutively, in the order outlined in the course.
  • There are a given number of assignments linked to a specific exam, and they are the building blocks for subsequent assignments and exams. Wait until the grade/feedback on the current exam is returned before submitting subsequent assignments and exams.
  • Students can work at their own pace within the limits set by the course instructor on the number of assignments that can be submitted per week (see Course Rules in Canvas for instructor requirements).
  • Instructors will grade assignments within three weeks after the date of receipt but are not required to grade faster than the maximum number of assignments per week listed in the Course Rules.
  • Students must complete ALL assignments and exams to be eligible for a final course grade.

Student information is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Independent Study in Idaho instructors and staff may release a student’s education and/or financial records by telephone or email to select individuals or organizations if that student files a Release of Information Form with the ISI office. Mail or fax this form to ISI.

This form can be downloaded from Forms. For more information about FERPA, access the Faculty-Staff Handbook, Chapter 2: Student Affairs Policies, Student Education Records, Section 2600.

FERPA may be more permissive or restrictive than the privacy and public information laws of some states. Therefore, the Idaho Public Records Law must be taken into account when the ISI considers issues related to student records.
